Overnight protests in Hyderabad after BJP MLA Raja Singh granted bail

Protesters’ attempts to march towards Raja Singh’s house early Wednesday morning were foiled by the police. They also burnt his effigies in many places.

Protests continued overnight in the Old City area of Hyderabad Tuesday against the alleged derogatory comments made by an MLA, T. Raja Singh, who belongs to Modi’s party, against the Prophet on social media.

A large number of people gathered simultaneously outside multiple police stations in the old city of Hyderabad late Monday night, registering a protest, demanding the arrest of BJP MLA T Raja Singh for his alleged derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammad in a video shared on YouTube.

Protesters blocked the road outside the city police commissioner’s office in Basheerbagh and stormed into the office of the deputy commissioner of police (south zone).

AIMIM (All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen) General Secretary Syed Ahmed Pasha Quadri wrote to Telangana Legislative Assembly Speaker Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, demanding expulsion proceedings against Raja Singh for his remarks against Prophet Mohammed.

The letter alleged that Raja Singh’s conduct had breached the House’s privileges, and noted that it was a pattern, citing past incidents where the MLA had been booked for provocative comments and hate speech.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has also demanded Raja Singh’s voice samples be sent to a forensic science laboratory (FSL), in order to make the investigation indisputable.

Raja Singh was arrested, later in the day produced before a court, for allegedly making statements to outrage religious feelings.

However, the court turned down the remand application of the police for not following proper procedure in arrest and ordered the immediate release of the MLA.

The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (for trial of communal disturbances) returned the remand application filed by the local police for violation of prescribed procedure. The court also ordered the police to immediately release Mr. Raja Singh.

Bhartiya Janata Party and Modi’s supporters, congratulated and celebrated his walk-out from the court.
